William Franklin papers, 1872-1880.

This small collection includes two letters sent to General William Buel Franklin of Hartford, Connecticut, one from General W.T. Sherman. Also includes a menu card and a postcard regarding Franklin's funeral. Franklin moved to Hartford after the Civil War and worked for Colt Firearms, was active in civic affairs, and later worked for an insurance company.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance. Educated West Point, graduated 1843. Served in Mexican-American War, as Professor at West Point for three years and as an engineer until the outbreak of the Civil War.
